Awakening to Freedom

Prologue: The Labyrinth Named Freedom

“Are you free?” If asked this, how many people could answer “Yes” immediately? We use the word “freedom” daily, but its reality is as elusive as mist. Is not having to go to a company freedom? Is having money freedom? Or is the solitude of being bound by no one true freedom?

Many define freedom as “a state without constraints.” However, what waits beyond removing all constraints might be an “unfreedom” named infinite choices. In this article, we dismantle the concept of freedom we unconsciously believe in and explore the true nature of “real freedom” from philosophical, social, and personal perspectives. It is not mere escapism, but a journey to re-grip the reins of life with your own will.

Philosophy of Freedom: Between Rights and Responsibility

Thinking about freedom is reflecting on human history itself. From ancient Greece to the present, countless philosophers have tackled this difficult problem. Freedom is never about behaving as one pleases (licentiousness).

The Paradox of Freedom and Rights

When asserting “I have the right to do X,” we must simultaneously recognize the rights of others. My freedom must not infringe on your freedom. This balance is the foundation of a free society. Rights do not fall from heaven; they are like contracts established only when we mutually recognize them. A society that only asserts its own rights and ignores the rights of others degenerates not into freedom, but into a “war of all against all.” A truly free person is one who respects the freedom of others more than anyone else.

Responsibility as the Price of Freedom

Philosopher Sartre said, “Man is condemned to be free.” While we can (and must) choose all our actions ourselves, we must bear full responsibility for the results. This is the weight of freedom. If you follow someone’s instructions, you can blame “that person” if you fail, but excuses are not permitted for a free human. Unable to bear this isolation and the weight of responsibility, many modern people choose to “escape from freedom” themselves, seeking a safe haven within authority or groups.

The Path to Freedom: Breaking Inner Chains

No matter how free the outside world (laws and systems) becomes, it is meaningless if the inner world (mind) is chained. True unfreedom lies within our own minds.

Clearing Misunderstandings About Freedom

“If only I had money, I could be free.” “If only I quit my job, I could be free.” These are the biggest misunderstandings. Even if you win the lottery, if you hold anxiety or emptiness in your heart, it is the same as being in a luxurious cage. Freedom is not a state of the environment, but a state (way of being) of the mind. A human who can determine their own attitude even under the harshest conditions is free. As Frankl discovered in the concentration camp, spiritual freedom is the last fortress that no one can take away.

Is it True That “You Can’t Be Free Without Money”?

There may be a realistic objection: “Ideally, yes, but you can’t be free without funds.” Indeed, in a capitalist society, money is a “ticket for choices.” Teaching spiritual freedom to someone struggling with tomorrow’s food costs might be cruel.

However, the order is important here. It is not “once I save money, I will be free,” but “only after becoming mentally free are you released from the curse of money.” Many people continue an endless money game while holding a sense of lack (“it’s never enough”)—an unfree mindset. True economic freedom is not having enormous assets, but “knowing what is ‘Enough’ for yourself.” Those who know contentment can enjoy maximum freedom with minimal cost.

Liberation from Social Brainwashing

From the moment we are born, we receive brainwashing called “common sense.” “You’ll be happy if you get into a good university.” “You’re half a person if you don’t marry.” “You need 20 million yen for retirement.” These messages are merely conveniences to maintain the social system. Doubt these installed values and uninstall them once. “Is that really my thought?” “Is it a fear planted by someone else?” Continuing to ask critically is the only key to liberating your spirit.

Freedom Designed by Capitalism

Is the “freedom” we enjoy truly something we have won? In reality, it may be nothing more than “freedom we are made to choose,” cleverly designed by the capitalist system. What does this mean?

The True Nature of Prepared “Freedom”

Most of the choices we face in our lives from birth are prepared by the state and capitalists. Schools, companies, shops, houses, cars, food, hobbies, and even partners. We are under the illusion that we have the “freedom to choose” when faced with these, but we must not forget that we are actually being “made to choose from prepared options.”

Endless Scarcity and Time Exploitation

This system constantly implants a sense of lack in us: “something is missing.” “More convenient,” “Richness,” “You need money to be free.” By being made to believe this, we throw our “time”—which is life itself—into the labor market, exhausting it in exchange for money. Our time, or “life,” is being stolen as fuel for the system.

“Invisible Domination” and AI

The most terrifying part is that this exploitation is justified under the beautiful name of “freedom.” The state and capitalism propose that “to obtain freedom, you need to become richer” and “for that, you must work hard.” However, in reality, they are merely demanding obedience to the system. And now, using big data and AI, AI is anticipating our preferences and guiding our behavior at the unconscious level. If we do not realize this “invisible domination,” we may remain prisoners dreaming of freedom forever.

Freedom in Modern Society: How to Deal with Technology

We are told that current times are the freest in human history, but simultaneously, new unfreedoms are born. Ironically, the tools meant to free us are binding us.

New Cages Named Digital

With just one smartphone, we can access information worldwide and have been liberated from physical locations. However, being chased by notification sounds 24/7, joy and sorrow fluctuating with SNS evaluations, and being made to endlessly consume videos recommended by algorithms—can this state really be called freedom? We must regain the initiative to master technology instead of being used by it. Practicing digital minimalism and intentionally creating offline time are modern survival strategies.

Freedom from Information Overload

Information is power, but too much information becomes poison. Fake news, conspiracy theories, floods of negative news. If you continue to bathe in these defenselessly, the brain exhausts itself and falls into a suspension of thought. Exercise the “freedom not to obtain information.” Strictly select only truly necessary information sources and shut out noise. Remaining ignorant of what you don’t need to know is the most luxurious and wise intellectual defense art in the modern age.

Choosing a Free Life

We have discussed concepts, but ultimately, they must result in the practice of “how to live.” A free life is the process of creating a bespoke life just for yourself.

Pursuit of Self: Personality as a Compass

The phrase “live like yourself” is worn out, but its essence is to “be faithful to your own pleasure and discomfort.” Proceed in the direction you feel comfortable, not the correct answer decided by someone else. That may sometimes birth loneliness or friction. However, there are places you can only reach by accumulating choices your soul delights in. By not fearing being different from others and loving your “weird parts (individuality),” a unique career and view of life will blossom.

Become the Ruler of Time

Life is time. Therefore, if the usage of time is not free, life cannot be said to be free. People who say “I’m busy” as a habit have had their time control rights stolen by others. Have the courage to block time for truly important things and turn down trivial invitations. Time cannot be saved. Continuing to choose what to use this moment for with your own will is the only freedom allowed to us.

Conclusion: The Never-ending Journey to Freedom

Freedom is not a “goal” obtained once reached, but a “process” of constantly questioning and choosing.

What freedom will you choose today? Choosing the easy path by stopping thought, or carving your own path by accepting difficulties—it is all your freedom. The important thing is whether that choice is by “your own will.”

Do not fear becoming free. And be prepared to accept the responsibility and loneliness that accompany freedom. When that resolve is set, the world will open the door of infinite possibilities for you.
